Assignments

The papers are to be submitted

  • usually by the WebCT assignment drop box
  • a less preferable alternative is by WebCT internal email to me, put 'Assignment One (or <whatever>)' as the subject and send the assignment either as the message or as an attachment to the message.

Pure electronic documents need to be either plain text or formatted using HTML (just 'Save As' HTML using your favourite word processor). If you do not do this, then I will have to do it, by translating whatever document you supply into HTML (and it is far better for each of you to do it once, rather than me to do it 30 times). When these documents are uploaded, they need to have the suffix '.html' (eg SmithPaper.html).

If you don't know what all this means (or how to do it), ask the Graduate Assistant (or other members of  your group).

Documents not submitted in HTML will not be graded.

There will be a small task to be done in groups.

There also will be quizzes. (These are pretty self explanatory-- you click on the appropriate links, write your piece etc., and when they have been graded they are automatically returned to you.)

Group Task

Due xxx

  1. establish contact with each other by email or discussion group
  2. ensure that all group members can produce and upload documents in HTML
  3. mount a homepage that can carry any interesting personal details you wish and which certifies that all group members can do 2.
The grade for this is just all-or-nothing, based on completion.

Paper 1 (Single author)

Due xxx

Give a brief account of the nature of normative ethics. What factors may have bearing on whether an action is moral or ethical? How might ethical disputes be resolved?

(Grading criteria: There is a special purpose to this first paper. It needs to indicate that you have understood the material of the first section on the course on Ethical Theory. Mere cut-and-pastes from material I have provided you will not do this. You need to get the content into your own words, clearly and concisely. Examples of your own are good. You should write about two to four pages. I am not concerned with grammar, style, or spelling-- provided I can understand the paper and the faults are not so severe as to be a distraction. No bibliography is necessary. )

Paper 2 (Single author):

Due xxx

Give a brief account of one or more problems in information ethics that the modern information professional might face. Suggest solutions or possible courses of action for the problems that you describe. (Grading criteria:- Looking for a clear and concise discussion of a problem or problems. Examples of your own are good. You should write about two to four pages. Keep this one short, do not write more than four pages. I am not concerned with grammar, style, or spelling-- provided I can understand the paper and the faults are not so severe as to be a distraction. A short bibliography might be appropriate. The online course environment, with its Groupwork pages and Notes, provides, or will provide, a very rich resource. By all means use the materials you find there, but, if you do, ensure that you add something of your own.)

Submit this (in html) by uploading it to the assignment drop box.
