LSO MINUTES 2/10/98
Hello All! Welcome to the LSO Minutes- due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to attend the first 30 minutes of the LSO meeting. Luckily, Ian Hall (a new SIRLS student) was gracious enough to record the minutes for me until my arrival. THANK YOU, IAN!!!!! Let us begin.
*Guest Speaker: Charlie Hurt, Director of the School of Information Resources & Library Sciences
SIRLS is up for re-accreditation, and he has requested the LSO's assistance
-He outlined the re-accreditation process, referring in particular to a document called the "Program Presentation", which is currently in the first draft stage. He would like the first draft to be complete by early March (3/15/98), so that the second draft can be started in April.
-Dr. Hurt is enlisting our help so that the students can have input in the creation of the "Program Presentation." Input on this draft will be solicited via Web CT- he will be providing the URL/address in the near future. Responses can be submitted in the 'public' chat feature, or by private e-mail
-He suggested two approaches to soliciting student input:
1. assign a different student to each of the 6 'standards' within the draft
2. use some form of group assignment (Marianne will be posting more in depth information in the near future)
-Dr. Hurt is interested in comments on ways to improve the document
*After Dr. Hurt's departure, the LSO discussed various group formations for the project.
The consensus was that there would be committees formed (Marianne will be e-mailing the details). Some members present wanted to see the draft before making a final group-size determination as the final document was estimated at being (approx.) 20 pages per 'standard'. I believe that we will be having 6 committees; 3 people per committee.
*The Virtual Happy Hour sounds like a fantastic way to include the distance students in social activities. Keep watching for e-mails on details!
*LSO Board Report:
-VP, Elizabeth: she has received the official ALA/LSO members list
and will be sending out an e-mail regarding recognition & privacy.
We also discussed the benefits of being an LSO member (of which Elizabeth
will be sending a detailed e-mail message). We strongly encourage
people to join and pay the $3.00 dues so that we can continue to have
social events, various products for sale, etc
-Secretary, Denise: Thanks, Ian!!!!
-Web Builder, Howard: has the LSO Webpages updated (way to go, Howie!!)
If you are interested in posting your homepage on the SIRLS' site, please e-mail Howard to register (jhcarter@u.arizona.edu) We are going to attempt (no promises) to place the officers' pictures on the website, wearing LSO tee shirts in the near future. Officers, come to the next meeting prepared to be hotographed!
If you don't bring your LSO tee shirt, you can borrow one! Or, Sue Fitzner, has offered her services! She said that if you are in the area, stop by and she'll take your picture. Thanks, Sue!
-Program Coordinator, Meg: She will be posting a synopsis of the "Dr. Link" presentation. Next Wednesday, Carrie Russell, the UA copyright librarian (and a very nice person!!!) will be speaking in the SIRLS' conference room @12:30 about copyright issues. Carrie is a very interesting speaker, I encourage everyone to come!!! Rick Gates will be speaking on Friday, February 27th in the SIRLS' courtyard- the time TBA. This is a treat, since he doesn't live in Tucson, but teaches virtually. It is hoped that we can all go to the Frog & Firkin afterwards. Meg will be sending detailed information soon. There are also several other people lined up to speak and a 'career day, sponsored by AzLA is being planned.
-Fundraiser, Grace: Gave information on coffee mugs and will be sending an e-mail to get an idea of how many people are interested in buying them. We do not have enough money in our account to order new tee shirts until we sell the old ones. I encourage everyone to pay the $3.00 dues to become an LSO member and buy a tee shirt, if you are so inclined! You don't have to be an LSO member to purchase a shirt. Grace also checked out keychains, they are very nice but very expensive.
QUOTE CONTEST- Deadline is Wednesday February 11, 1998. She will send out the quotes submitted and make sure that no one was forgotten, then she will submit them for election! More information coming from Grace soon.
-Social Activities Coordinator, Lisa: Happy Hour 5pm @the Frog & Firkin every Friday! She is planning some other activities and will be forthcoming with the information soon.
ALA Representative, Denise: I have just heard from the ALA and they will be sending me a questionnaire to fill out to match my interests with a staff member at the conference. I'm thrilled!!!!!!

Reports from Counsel Members
- Vice President/Treasurer, Elizabeth: Was happy to announce that
more people have joined the LSO. Good deal!
- Faculty Student Liaison, Mary: Kathy Wilka was wondering why students
were not signing up for interviews on campus. She wants people to
know
that it's a really good opportunity to hone our interviewing skills.
Some
people responded to her query that it was the geographic location
that the
interviewers came from that discouraged them. Let Kathy know where
YOU
would like to see potential employers come from! Mary took suggestions
from people at the meeting and here's what came up: Pacific Northwest,
California, Nevada, & Midwest.
- Also, the official "LSO Membership" form is completed. It will be
in
the LSO office soon - so drop on by & fill one out if you're in
the area.
One will be posted on the LSO Web site for distance students, and
those of
us that may have a better chance of filling a form out on-line as
opposed
to remembering to do it when we're in the area :)!
- Additionally, there are surveys from the graduate college that we
are
asked to fill out- they are in the LSO box (across from Carmen's desk):
drop by & fill one out and leave it in the LSO box. Mary is also
distributing them on her own (way to go, Mary!)- They are to be returned
by March 2nd.
- Furthermore, "Living in the Future II" (a conference happening in
Tucson in April) is looking for IRLS students to donate time to working
at the conference in exchange for attendance. The web site for this
conference can be found on the UA Library Main page in the banner
announcements at the top of the page. The URL to SABIO is
http://dizzy.library.arizona.edu/. For more information on exact
details e-mail kscott@bird.library.arizona.edu
!
- Finally, National Library Week is coming up. The LSO would like
some
ideas about professional activities that we can have. Send ideas to
Mary
Feeney mfeeney@U.Arizona.EDU. The SLA & LSO may sponsor a brown
bag. More
details to come "My Mom says I'm cool.".
- Friend's Committee Chair, Sue: Will be meeting with Kathy &
Sue about
making the Alumni Association official through the University. They
will
also begin discussing the Newsletter.
- Thanks Merideth for sending information about removing oneself from
a
list.
- Web Builder, Howie: Has updated the information on the directory.
He
has added some new things & would like other people's feedback.
E-mail
him jhcarter@u.arizona.edu.
- Program Coordinator, Meg: Will be sending out reminders of speaker
dates
& times. Don't forget Rick Gates will be speaking in the SIRLS
courtyard
or conference room this FRIDAY @ noon. Carla Stoffle's topic will
be
'Core Values'- exact time TBA.
- Fundraiser, Grace: the information about the LSO coffee mugs will
be
coming soon! A new quote has been chosen- whoo hoo!!!!
- Social Activities, Lisa: Frog & Firkin this Friday (weather
permitting).
If anyone has a suggestion for another bar let it be known- we are
looking
for alternative inside places as a back up to rainy weather. A Monday
book discussion is being arranged by Jason Brown- Lisa is unable to
attend
that night, but wants Jason to know that the LSO fully supports his
efforts at social activities. Look for e-mail postings from Jason
for
details. Lisa is going to be planning a picnic after Spring Break.
- Faculty Search Committee Rep, Eileen: Will be meeting with the committee
after the application submission deadline to begin the selection process.
She will be posting additional e-mails about the process in the near
future.
- ALA Rep, Denise: Is very happy to be getting a money donation from
the
LSO for partial airfare. Thank you!!!!! This is going to be such a
great experience!
New Business:
-The committees for the re-accreditation process have been formed.
Don
Fallis is the coordinator for this project- contact him for further
clarification at fallis@u.arizona.edu.
-LSO Board Members please remember to drop by Sue Fitzner's office

Subject: LSO Minutes 3/10/1998
Hi All,
I know you've all been waiting patiently for the 'real' minutes to
be
posted so you can start your Spring Break....I love having an inflated
sense of my own ego.....
LSO Minutes 3/10/98
These minutes are cut & pasted reports from various officers:
Report of Friends Person:
Still pulling together the newsletter. We have several
formats we're
looking at (from Microsoft Publisher), and several news items, including
an interview with our newest Professor, an alumni "whereabouts" section,
and hopefully a status report on the Alumni group's official status
within
the University.
Also still working on the "official status" part - we
have two possible
lines of information - they're taking time to gather.
Here's the report from the Program Coordinator:
Rita Manak is coming on Wednesday, 15 April, from 11-12.
Her area of
expertise is Intellectual Property Issues. Does any one have an
interest in a particular topic?
Jim Matarazzo, Dean of the Library School at Simmons,
may be coming
sometime in April.
Mike from the Law Library might give a brown bag, too.
Rachael Anderson from the Arizona Health Sciences Library
is willing to
come and speak to us about her field. Is any one interested in this
area? She would be scheduled in late April, early May, and I'm concerned
that at that time of year her talk might not attract a lot of people,
due to finals. She is flexible about day and time, so please let me
know
if you're interested in learning more about Health Sciences
librarianship.
Report from Mary Feeny:
National Library Week is April 19-25. I e-mailed Jere Voigt at Tucson
Public asking if they have anything planned & if LSO can
participate/partner with them. She said that's a great idea &
will get
back to me when she finds out what they're doing. I'll keep you all
posted!
Merideth Jensen
Based on a suggestion from Kathy and Sue, the jobs coordinator position
has
been split between two people. One will deal with forwarding postings
from Jobs Listservs to the JOBOPS List, and cutting and pasting Job
Listings from various web sites onto the list. The other person will
handle the data entry of postings that are mailed or faxed to the
jobops
list. I (Merideth) will be handling the electronic side, while Mary
Feeney will be dealing with the paper copy (Thanks, Again Mary!).
Lisa Hussey:
Start planning the picnic either the last weekend in March or
the first
weekend in April (now that the weather's cleared). I would appreciate
any
volunteers who want to help. Don't forget about the Coffee house book
discussion that's happening on
Monday night at 6pm at Coffee Express (I think).
That's what I got!
Everyone have a safe & fantastic Spring Break!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy
basking in
the knowledge of no comprehensive exams- those of you that took them,
be
happy that you passed. Huzzah to all!!!! They say women use more
punctuation than men....I don't know.....(Who worries about these
things
anyway?)

Subject: "Core Values"
Yesterday Carla Stoffle presented a draft of her paper
"When Our Values
Conflict" to a group of library students. On July 1, 1998 the "Year
of
Intellectual Freedom" begins, and this paper will be read at one of
the
"kickoff" events.
A brief summary:
The Chinese curse, "May you live in an interesting time,"
could easily
describe current library culture. New developments in science and
technology have rocked the foundations of the profession while
presenting unique opportunities. In this time of uncertainty we can
deconstruct the profession to discover its core values, which can
guide
us. Our base is our values, and how we apply them in service to our
customers. Basic values are guideposts that can undergird other
services. These values evolved over time in debate and in dialogue
with
colleagues.
If we accept the foregoing as true, we must use core
values to clarify
our behavior.
We are aware of these core values by examining the relevant literature
and by discussing the profession with our colleagues.
The core values are:
intellectual freedom; equity of access; freedom of access; privacy
of
use and of individual records; professional neutrality; fair use;
social
responsibility; preservation of the cultural record; a safe area in
which to use materials.
We assume the values can be applied absolutely, one
at a time. What
about when values come into conflict? Can we see values existing in
a
continuum?
Historically, there's been a conflict between those adopting an
absolutist stance and those who accepted a range of responses.
On the national level of this conflict the convulsions nearly destroyed
us. In the 1960s, the debate whether or not the ALA would adopt social
responsibility as a value was framed in "either/or" terms, between
those
who saw intellectual freedom as an absolute, and those who saw social
responsibility as an absolute.
[She mentions the debate about the 1978 film "The Speaker."]
A recent conflict in the profession has centered around South Africa:
do you boycott companies that sold books to South Africa, or do you
continue to do business with them [so as not to compromise the
intellectual freedom of South Africans gaining access to these
materials]? This was an emotionally charged debate because people
could
not invoke overarching values.
In our local communities we rationalize our deviations
from core values
when they occur. For example, charging for photocopy services, or
printouts from the Internet are accepted as "necessary evils."
Today we are being tested by the Internet. In the past
we selected
materials based on complex criteria. With the Internet, there's a
conflict between the availability of information and the challenges
to
the meaningfulness of our selection policies and procedu
out recently with subject heading "Attention all SIRLS Students"
Officer Reports:
Sue Trombley SIRLS/LSO Friends Committee Chair
-Newsletter is in the works

maybe this will help explain why we see him running up & down

Job Opportunities:
Ann Eagan, Vicki Mills, and Elaina Norlin, University of Arizona
librarians, talked to us about job opportunities at the UA Main and
Science & Engineering Libraries. Due to current library student
employees
graduating and new jobs being created, a lot of new student jobs are
coming open. Students are HIGHLY encouraged to apply for these jobs,
as they offer practical, hands-on experience, they help in getting
jobs after graduating (experience is very important), & provide
you with professional references.
Potential job opportunities include:
- During the first two weeks of the Fall semester, the libraries will
be
making a massive education effort for university students (e.g., how
to
get an e-mail account, using SABIO, etc., etc.). The library will
need
help from library students in providing bibliographic instruction.
- The reference desks at both Main and Science & Engineering hire
student
workers (you don't necessarily need a science background to work at
S&E).
They are looking particularly for students who will be here through
Spring
1999, and who can begin training this summer.
- The Residence Hall Program will continue in the Fall with library
students staffing the computer areas and providing assistance.
- Other opportunities usually arise, including working in Technical
Services, Interlibrary Loan, and for librarians on the Fine Arts &
Humanities and Social Sciences Teams. Making contact with librarians
is
always a good idea.
For more information or to apply for library jobs,
contact Ann Eagan
(aeagan@bird.library.arizona.edu), Vicki Mills
(vamills@bird.library.arizona.edu), or Elaina Norlin
(enorlin@bird.library.arizona.edu).
Thanks to Ann, Vicki, and Elaina for making us aware
of these great
opportunities.

in depth information will be posted soon by Marianne.
Special Thanks to Kimberly Kranz for making the program/invitations!
I would like to THANK EVERYONE that participated
in the LSO this
semester- you all did a FANTASTIC job!!! We will be having on last
meeting on May 5th to wrap up any last minute details. Elections will
be held soon, Marianne will post information via e-mail in the near
future. I encourage anyone that has not held a position to consider
it-
it's a great opportunity to gain valuable experience- and it's also
fun.

Sue Trombley- SIRLS/LSO Friends Committee Chair:
Will continue to pursue
official alumni recognition during the summer. She will also be working
on the SIRLS' Newsletter. Great work, Sue!!!
Elizabeth Cuckow- Vice President/Treasurer: We received
a $25 check for
back dues from a graduating LSO student-(whoo hoo!!) with a very nice
letter to the LSO. Thank you for that contribution- it was well
appreciated & well used.
The Constitution was voted a change. The constitution
reads that the VP
must attend meetings with ASUA- however, when Elizabeth inquired into
this, she was told that ASUA has no affiliations with any graduate
programs. The constitution will eliminate this responsibility.
However, the LSO VP must, on a yearly basis, be officially recognized
by
the U of A. The constitution will now also reflect the new procedure
for this recognition. On the plus side, we may be able to get a
significant amount of funds from this source.
Meg Warburg sent out a request for a cataloguer to
come to the UofA to
teach a cataloging workshop. The request was sent to the SLA list.
One
person, from Mich, replied that they would like to come and teach
this
workshop. She inquired if she could get travel expenses paid. The
request was forwarded to Dr. Charlie Hurt & we are awaiting a
decision.
Regarding the insulated mugs (remember, we do not
have enough money for
the initial costs):
-Someone e-mailed a request that we should elicit commitments from
people
that they would promise to buy a mug if we order them
- Another suggestion was that we ask all SIRLS students
(on a volunteer
basis, of course) to donate just $2 towards the mug fund. If we have
approx. 300 students- we'd have enough to get the mugs & use a
fancy
design with nice colors.
Anyone with any feedback or other suggestions let
the LSO know!!! We
will continue to discuss plans for a new LSO item.
Marianne will be getting more T-shirts (Thanks!!!) so we will again
have
all the sizes.
Sandy's party was a SMASHING SUCCESS!!! Thank you
to EVERYONE that
brought food. And an ENORMOUS Thank You to Lisa Hussey for organizing
the party & getting the Beautiful engraved clock for Sandy from
the
SIRLS' students. Bravo, Lisa!
Special thanks to Marianne Buehler for ALL the time
& effort she has put
in to the LSO to make things happen! Thanks, Marianne!!! We'll miss
you when you graduate this summer.
We also discussed ways to form a tighter link between
SIRLS & the
library. We will be inviting Jeff Rosen, our liaison to the library,
to
each LSO meeting that introduces the new board (2x/ yr) & to the
new
student orientations. Jeff has made a great start with this new
responsibility! Thanks, Jeff- we know you'll do a excellent job!
We voted on more changes to the constitution. (Today was a very
productive day.)
We, again, amended some of the responsibilities of the LSO board
positions. The Faculty- Student Liaison will also work with the liaison
to the library & work with the distance students regarding any
special
requests. We feel these changes will benefit everyone in SIRLS.
Old Business:
Graduation Reception Plans: Thanks again, Kimberly
Kranz for doing a
great job on the brochures! Remember all students & loved ones
are
invited to this event. Please RSVP to Sue Fitzner
(sfitzner@u.arizona.edu) ASAP so she can pull together the food part
of
the party. As we know, the SIRLS staff is overwhelmingly busy, and
they
always work their hardest for us- so make this easy for SUE- RSVP!!!!
Thanks also to Meg for making signs! Marianne will be posting more
information about the party & a plea for volunteers to help set
up.
LSO Elections: Please send in your nominations ASAP!
Marianne will be
posting the nominations soon & will allow everyone 24 hours to
pull
their name from the list (should they be nominated without knowing
it…and other reasons) if need be.
Please remember to send nominations for the OUTSTANDING
STUDENT AWARD to
Sue Fitzner, also ASAP.
LSO Board: the notebooks are due Saturday May 16th-
please put in the
LSO box.
Don't forget the distance students arranged a get
together at Gentle
Ben's on June 7th at 6pm. This is a great opportunity to meet them
&
give them some insight about Tucson.
Once again- Thanks everyone for making this a great LSO semester!

Hi All!
Well, I'm back as secretary for a small amount of time until Meg returns.
Everyone will just have to cope with a smile (ha ha).
LSO Minutes 7/22/98
First off I'd like to thank Howie (VP/Treasurer/web builder) for driving
me & my bike home in the rain after the meeting!
Professor Seavey, acting director, came to give us
some words of wisdom.
He encourages people to drop by this summer by going directly to his
office because after the fall semester starts he will probably have
to
have people schedule appoints to meet with him. Also, don't forget
he
will be teaching Government Information IRLS 572 virtually in the
fall.
Howard
(VP {acting president}/treasurer/web builder):
wants people to e-mail him with any problems regarding LSO Board Positions
or general student issues! His e-mail is jhcarter@u.arizona.edu.
-Just a reminder! SIRLS will be having another faculty search committee
this fall, so start thinking about who you would like as your LSO
faculty
search committee representative. Nominations will begin in the fall.
Sharon
(Fundraiser): is currently starting to reorder LSO tee shirts- look
for
the new quote!
Eileen
(Student-Faculty Liaison): encourages everyone to alert her to general
concerns so she can bring them up at the faculty meetings in the fall.
Those that can make it to the lso meetings can bring concerns there
or
e-mail her mailto:elsmith@u.arizona.edu.
-She also mentioned that there may be a cataloging
workshop in the near
future. Stay tuned for more details.
-We discussed coming up with some sort of IRLS student
body survey to get
a better idea about the wants & background of the people we are
to be
representing. That will be a topic for discussion in the fall.
Bryan
(Social activities coordinator): Happy hours are going great! We have
a
great summer student body- keep up the good work everyone! Happy Hours
are Fridays @5:30pm at Gentle Ben's for the$ $1 all you can eat taco
bar.
Bryan would like to thank Kelly Hovendick for providing
transportation for him
to the ice cream social! Whoo Hoo for those that deliver ice cream.
All activities have had a good turnout.
Look for more details about the up coming fall new student pizza party!
Our target date is the first Friday after the fall session begins
in the
evening from 5-7pm. All SIRLS' people & their loved ones are invited.
Therese
(Jobs coordinator): She's been posting away! good job, Therese!
The next meeting will be on Monday August 3 @1pm
in the SIRLS' conference
room.
Ta TA! Please excuse any blatant spelling errors.
"I put my hands into the roaring flames
I felt the pain as it started to burn
I've done the same thing over again and again
As if I never ever wanted to learn.

come on get me if you can"

Hello All!
'Tis I, Denise, again with the LSO Minutes. I would like to start
out by
thanking Howie for driving me home in the heat today in exchange for
taking the minutes. Thanks, Howie! On to business......... questions.
Sue (SIRLS/LSO Friends Committee Chair)- The newsletter
is almost
finished! We viewed the draft today. WAY TO GO, SUE!!! It should be
out
by the end of the month. Non-alumni can view it on the SIRLS' Homepage.
Bryan (activities)- Whoo Hoo for Bryan, he brought
snacks today. I love
snacks. Happy Hour is still going strong. Concerning the fare-the-well
summer party: Tuesday August 11 @6:30pm. He's taking votes for either
Frog-n-Firkin or O'Mally's. E-mail Bryan directly before tomorrow
night to
cast your vote. bdf@u.arizona.edu
Distance Voices!
Two summer school distance students came to the LSO meeting today-
thanks!
Thy each had some good comments t make.
Sandra Tratos: She had a very good summer here in
Tucson. She was able to
chat with Kathy Wilka about her experience in SIRLS.
Vicky Perry: She commented that distance students
have a hard time getting
"in the know" about such things as faculty, which courses are beneficial
etc. She proposes that there be a method of commenting aboto the list soon to give information on how to
sign
up for the Job Opportunities list.
Bryan Freiberg (Social Activities/ Mischief Coordinator):
Happy hours will resume next week, as we'll have the pizza party this
week.
Howie Carter (VP and Treasurer):
Will be posting information about this semester's dues.
Eileen Smith (Faculty / Student Liaison):
There will be a winter session class, lasting 9 - 10 days, in January.
The course will be worth 3 credits and will fulfill residency
requirements for the program. More information will be posted as details
are finalized. They're hoping to have a similar option available for
spring break.
Announcements are forthcoming for organizational meetings, such as
the
first SLA meeting of the semester.
Kathy Wilka and Sue Fitzner are working on a virtual mentoring program.
In October, the accreditation specialists arrive to check out our
program.
Professor Hurt is at work getting someone in for a cataloging workshop.
Meg Warburg (Secretary):
Am working on posting accurate, informative minutes in a timely fashion.
Sue Trombley (IRLS Friends Committee Chair):
Newsletter to the alumni will be out by the end of the month.
Sue Klement offered to give a brownbag presentation on indexing; this
would coordinate well with the cataloging workshop.
Sharon Silengo (Fundraiser):
Is putting in an order for more T shirts (the style with the barrel
cacti on the front).
Is at work on new design & is checking out other suppliers as
well as
other product ideas (book marks, gift totes, "book buddies," travel
mugs, pen holders).
Denise Bova (Webmaster):
Was unable to attend the meeting.

in the computer room
here, and determine which computers are available for printing.

in the SIRLS
conference room, every other Tuesday afternoon, from 2 to 3 P.M. All
students are encouraged to attend, to bring ideas & suggestions
for the
program, and to enjoy a snack, courtesy of the LSO. Ideas from distance
students are welcome, too!

Wanted to make sure that every one who signed up for the Job
Opportunities List has been receiving her postings.
Lisa Hussey, former Social Activities Coordinator, was in attendance.
Eileen Smith (Faculty / Student Liaison):
The next faculty meeting is tomorrow, and for that reason she had
nothing to report today on tomorrow's meeting.
Howie Carter (VP and Treasurer):
Was absent due to a work-related commitment.
Sharon Silengo (Fundraiser):
Orders for tee shirts keep on rolling in. She'll put in another order
for the tees, and is keeping her eyes open for other products to promote

Has been working on organizing Sue Klement's brownbag presentation

Is working on plans for various activities this semester, in addition
to
Happy Hour on Fridays.
Denise Bova (Webmaster):
Has been considering some LSO web page projects, details TBA.
Ian Hall (President):
Announced that Jerrilyn had won last weekend's election; he posted
this
information earlier today. ( We were fortunate to have three excellent
candidates for the position! Thank you for your eagerness to contribute
to SIRLS and LSO.)
There was a general discussion about options for
a future get-together
for students, faculty, and UA librarians. There is particular interest
in an event around graduation in December.
We still have a vacant office, that of Program Coordinator.
The P.C.
gets to schedule brownbag presentations given by professionals to
SIRLS
students; it's an excellent opportunity to meet information specialists
from varied backgrounds, as well as a good way of meeting fellow
students with whom you don't have classes.
Next meeting will be Tuesday, September 22, from
2 till 3, SIRLS
conference room. If you're eager to make this a better program, we
welcome your participation.

good training for further work at a special library.

"Lard is lard, no matter where you eat it."
- Denise Bova
Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998
Subject: Today's LSO Meeting 10/20/1998
Denise gave us a brown bag presentation about her
experience as the
ALA/LSO Representative from SIRLS to the ALA midsummer conference
in
Washington this past June. As usual, Denise conveyed a lot of useful
information while entertaining us at the same time. Thank you, Denise!
We had reports from four officers.
Jerrilyn Blackman gave us a progress report from
the Search Committee
for a new director of SIRLS.
Eileen Smith (Faculty/Student Liaison) reported that she's still working
to get someone in for a cataloging workshop before
the semester
finishes.
Bryan Freiberg (Social Activities/Mischief Coordinator)
told us about
the plans for the December bash; he posted all the information this
evening, so I won't repeat it here.
Sue Trombley (IRLS Friends Committee Chair) said
that the indexing
presentation went well, and that she will soon post notes from that
event to the listserv.
Please join us next week when Professor Zoe Stavri
gives a brown bag
presentation in which she introduces herself, discusses her interests
and her plans for a series of colloquia. This event will be next
Tuesday, October 27, at 2 PM, at SIRLS (in either the courtyard or
conference room). I'll be posting reminders between now and then.
Date: Wed, 4 Nov 1998
Subject: LSO Meeting, 11/03/1998
Notes from yesterday's short-but-substantive LSO meeting:
Ian Hall (LSO President) started a discussion about
the responsibilities
of the ALA/LSO representative and the auxiliary representative at
the
June ALA convention in New Orleans. More information about the distinct
roles of each representative will be forthcoming.
Sue Trombley (IRLS Friends Committee Chair) reported
that Susan Klement
had sent notice of a helpful website regarding indexing; its URL is
http://www.indexres.com
Sharon Silengo (Fundraiser) is researching various
items to sell, in
addition to tee shirts.
Denise Bova (Webmaster) was present but had to leave
early for the Chat
session.
Jerrilyn Blackman (SIRLS Director Search Committee
Student Rep.) is
trying to line up a brown bag meeting for students to have the
opportunity to talk with Judith Becker.
Eileen Smith (Faculty/Student Liaison) will be posting
minutes from the
11/04 meeting soon.
Mary Feeney (Jobs Coordinator) has been posting job
opportunity
information.
Bryan Freiberg (Social Activities Coordinator) reported
that reservations
for the graduation dinner are rolling in. He's working on getting
together the invitations, programs, and a diverse selection of music.
Howie Carter (VP/Treasurer) was absent; we missed him.
Meg Warburg (Secretary) wants to thank those of you
who have sent in
your ideas for speakers and topics for Zoe's colloquium series. The
deadline for submission is November 30.
Lisa Hussey, former Mischief Coordinator, was also in attendance.
Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998
Subject: Today's LSO Meeting 11/17/1998
Notes from today's LSO meeting:
In attendance: Ian Hall, Denise Bova, Sue Trombley,
Sharon Silengo,
Bryan Freiberg, Lisa Hussey, Eileen Smith, Howie Carter, Atilla Vekony,
his well-behaved daughter, and Jerrilyn Blackman.
Eileen Smith (Faculty/Student Liaison) had five items
in particular to
bring to our attention:
1) a big thank you to Jeff Rosen, the liaison between the library
and
SIRLS, for supporting the option to access MARC record format from
Sabio.
2) Thank you to Kathy Wilka and Sue Fitzner for developing the idea
of a
Winter Session course, which has been so popular that a second section
has been added.
3) She's trying to get Lois Mai Chan to come give a cataloging workshop
spring semester. For students graduating in December (next month!)
Eileen hopes to get together a 2-3 hour workshop. Workshop size will
be
limited, so keep a look out for Eileen's posting.
4) MARC record booklets from Follett are in a box in Sue Fitzner's
office. Students on campus may stop by and pick one up. Distance
students may send in a SASE (full size, 8" x 12") and a booklet will
be
sent out.
5) The diploma the master's degree students will be receiving reads
only
"Master of Arts" (we won't receive an M.L.S. degree) and the diploma
does not specify what the M.A. is in. This could be a potential problem
for people who are doing free-lance work.
Bryan Freiberg (Social Activities Coordinator): has
been working on many
details of the December graduation dinner party, such as nominations
for
students speakers, awards, certificates, the program. Bryan would
really
appreciate it if people planning to attend could RSVP before (well
before) December 1. He's also busy working out details for the sound
system and music.
Jerrilyn Blackman (Student Representative, Search
Committee for SIRLS
director) reports that a brown bag with Judith Becker will probably
be
scheduled for early next semester.
Denise Bova (Web builder) will act as Ian's tally
buddy regarding the
ALA LSO ALA representative and auxiliary representative elections.
That's all for November LSO meetings.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998
Subject: LSO Meeting, 12/01/1998
Notes from today's LSO meeting:
In attendance: Ian Hall, Mary Feeney, Bryan Freiberg,
Sharon Silengo,
Eileen Smith,
Sue Trombley, Lisa Hussey, Howie Carter, and Jerrilyn Blackman. (We
missed you, Denise!)
Bryan Freiberg (Social Activities Coordinator): reported
that we'll be
coming close to the limit of 135 guests at the graduation dinner.
He has
extended the RSVP deadline to Thursday, December 3, at 3 P.M.
John Howley has offered to bring his boombox, so there will be music
at
the event. Dress code for the dinner: "whatever makes you happy."
Nominations for graduation dinner speakers closed at 5 PM today, and
students will have 48 hours to decide whom they would like as speakers.
Eileen Smith (Faculty/Student Liaison): Thirteen
people have signed up
for the cataloging workshop; SIRLS has been very generous and will
cover
the costs of photocopying materials (thank you).
(I'd like to add that Eileen is providing the workshop
as a "gift" to
graduating students, and is doing this out of the goodness of her
heart.
Thank you, Eileen!)
Lisa Hussey (Officer at Large; former Mischief Coordinator):
noted that
Mary Graham at the Arizona State Museum is always looking for library
students as interns; something for students to consider for future
reference.
Jerrilyn Blackman (Student Representative, Search
Committee for SIRLS
director): the school has received four applicants so far for the
position of director.
Ian Hall (President): noted that LSO officer elections
are coming up
soon. All positions will be open. He'll be posting information regarding
nominations.
A final note: cheers to Lisa Hussey and Sharon Silengo
on their new,
post-SIRLS jobs. Congratulations! And best wishes to all imminent
graduates who are seeking employment.
That's it for this year!
Best wishes for the holidays and 1999!
-Meg
