There is a lot of library related items up on YouTube.

Introductions – Bruce Fulton visiting
Roseann, Jerrald, Aaron, Michelle, Etta, Paula, Alicia, Cindy, Tracy, Beth, Rebecca, Cecilia, Mira,
FYI Jobops list serv, SIRLS owns it, so we don’t have to worry about it, Anyone can post to it.
Pam has a flight for ALA in DC
Join LSO just $20 for the entire time here,
Bruce – Virtual student liaisons would like to have some discussion/meeting board for virtual students not connected to students just a virtual meeting space online –
LSO has been trying to do it in the past but can not seem to get past the technical issues and then it gets dropped. For some of the stuff using the Wi\ki for cont. management system makes more sense than its use right now, selling textbooks. Example : Questions about classes – virtual board searchable for future students
There are complications trying to manage your own cont. management system – maybe easier in a year or so. Bruce will look around and try to help
Bruce – A discussion forum will occur sooner than we can move the website.
Paula – Our part in the Ethics roundtable March 23-25th – mini conference to discuss and talk about issues surrounding the rights of indigenous people, met with Kay to see what role would be, help out at conference, want us to write grants to Icon and Zerox grants to pay for food for poster session on that last day , grant turned in 10 days before the event.
Is it a guaranteed money? (If we don’t get the grant we will still have food, but she would like the extra, depends on how much food is there.)
Deciding -March 2nd. Bruce recommend getting it in as soon as possible, Interested helping get it together – Aaron offered to help. – mainly have to say – what you want, why you want, catering has to be through the U of A approved list – takes time to get set up – so do as soon as possible. Chris can give details.
Bruce – keynote speaker Maurine Roy – SIRLS alum,, pres elect of ALA, getting Publicity together,
Bruce exits
Volunteers are needed for the running of Kay Mathiason’s Info Roundtable – Looking for: greeters, people to help set up, moderators, everything, 50 people in total.
Kay Matheson’s Info Roundtable. - Grad students can post items for poster session, Paula will find out when have to be done by.
Bess de Farber – Ask Bess if she is willing to move her Art of Grants to enable a larger workshop. As a 3 hour workshop might draw people from Phoenix. Have on a Sat. sometime in April with a late start to the day and an LSO event afterwords.
April 15th is LSO Fundraiser
Bruce would compensate us for food $50 for Tom Wilding’s talk on Wednesday. Mexican finger foods, delivered, pick up and do that way. All we need are receipts and it needs to be vegetarian,
Sandy does a tea in april – LsO doing at a different time, lunchtime on weekdays seems to be a bad time
CCP tour has to be at 2, because it closes at 4.
Paula is working on having a tour of a community college library.
Arizona Historical Society might be open to a tour –
State Museum and its library as well – tour –
Tour ideas -
Postal library in Tucson, on campus somewhere –
Botany library plant lib., insect lib.
1st faculty meeting – fundraising ideas
issue – Cecilia will to the meeting to set Policy on POS & e-portfolio. (No date yet) You maybe be able to turn in plan of study with for e-portfolio but you still have to print out pos for students to hand it in
Fundrasing – have candy now
Candy List with Michelle, sell for $1 each – each box has 30
Hand in candy/money at the end to Michelle
Laffs have not been able to get a hold of them to set up a social event.
Mira will go by tonight
Aaron will call on Tues.
T-shirts – Mira emailed Liz, She hasen’t heard back if she can or can’t design them, otherwise we will hold a design contest.
Idea: Lib. Boot camp – would be good for calendars and t-shirts especially after surviving 504
Darreth be here next meeting 2-16-07
Wine tasting social in phoenix fell through. Another social event for phoenix will be known at the next meeting. Attempting to arrange a virtual student forum , its coming but needs to be worked out.
We changed the name of distant student liasions to virtual student liaison
Beth & Etta volunteered to update Constitution – when done will email out to students so they can vote upon revisions.
Social Events –
May 5th end of the year party
Spring Break Event – Come Celebrate St. Paddy’s @ the Auld Dubliner,
Oscar party –Sunday @ La Aldea’s great room – Casual Potluck – Feb.
25th. 4-10, Contest held to predict the winners.
Beth – The LSO website is problematic, hard to maintain and change. Beth would like to move to a content management system. Though most software that is available also requires that you have a database. Beth doesn’t think that is going to happen. Another idea is that of moving to our own web space. Beth hasen’t done a lot of investigating it would like to form committee to investigate. We would have a lot more control to do stuff on the web, a lot of our student body is virtual might be worth it, Beth is willing to contribute her own funds to help get it started and willing to support it to keep it going,
Committee formed to address issue of potentially moving to own webspace: The Virtual stud. Liaisions, Jill Tinsley, Michelle, & Cindy.

- Grant for the Information Ethics Roundtable: Was waiting on some final details from Kay Mathiesen, SIRLS Faculty & Roundtable Organizer. Just heard back and so grant should be completed by the end of this weekend.
- Other Items: Working on “Emerging Technologies” pan with Coni Weatherford, SIRLS Alum and PCPL Librarian. Trying to get in touch with UA Librarian Louise Greenfield about resume consultations but haven’t yet received a response. Also thinking about asking Jan Knight, Information Broker, to speak.
Possible Florence Prison Library Book Drive (Rebecca Blakiston, LSO President)
- Librarian requested we hold a book drive or fundraiser to help library’s collection.
- Dereth DeHaan founded a Books for Libraries program which should meet the prison’s needs; Rebecca will e-mail Dereth contact information and she will get in touch with Librarian. She will let us know if there is more we can do to help.
First Grade Library Card Program (Rebecca Blakiston, LSO President, Ceclilia Tovar, LSO Faculty/Student Liaision, Aaron Valdivia, LSO Social Activities Coordinator)
- Attended PCPL Branch Manager’s meeting. Want LSO to participate in this new program. Would require going to local schools and speaking with teachers and/or children about libraries.

-
Dereth DeHaan’s report: Wine-tasting social & fundraiser to be held in Phoenix is ago; notification has gone out to the LSO, Phoenix Friends of SIRLS, & Alumni listservs. It has also been added to the SIRLS calendar. Still needs to be added to LSO calendar – Beth will do. Dereth contacted prison librarian regarding the Books for Libraries program and he is currently contacting participating books sources and anticipates having his book needs met! She reminded Leslie about contacting Brian Atkinson about the virtual discussion forum for virtual students; he is back and Leslie will follow up asap. Dereth will pass along information as she receives it.
-
Beth Hoffman: Recently found out that the Learning Technologies Center has a system for creating a discussion forum; you can request a board. Not sure if students can do this but will follow-up and bring back to the group.

-
Amanda Zagloba: Nuestras Raices is this weekend, Saturday 10:00-5:00. Hope people can attend!
Strategic Planning Report (Ruth Morgan)
-
Attended day-long SIRLS strategic planning meeting on 2/23 to represent SIRLS students; included SIRLS faculty as well as outside librarians from around the state; it was valuable to get that outside perspective. Goal was how to “prepare students for 2015” by identifying strategic priorities for SIRLS.
-
Possibilities discussed: Improving/adding technology courses (and possibly incorporating technology into every course); strengthening alumni relations; strengthening SIRLS community as a whole; strengthening the advising program; increasing faculty research; improving job placement; increasing prerequisites or strengthening requirements to enter SIRLS; partnering with other master’s programs on campus (such as journalism) to allow dual degrees.
-
Feedback from LSO group: More practice and less theory in courses generally; offer more “out of the norm” courses (such as the competitive intelligence course). SIRLS students, if you have any more feedback, please send to Ruth Morgan at ziaruth@email.arizona.edu.
Programs Update (Paula Maez & Cindy Elliott)
-
Cindy:
-
Jobs/Internship Fair will be held March 28th. An e-mail will be sent out soon to the listserv. Will send Beth Hoffman & Bruce Fulton information to put on the LSO & SIRLS calendars. TPPL and Raytheon are two of the employers that will be in attendance. Will be requesting donations to be given as door prizes; Paula will find out about doing a Starbucks basket again (did last Fall). Asking for volunteers for set-up. If you would like to volunteer, e-mail Cindy at celliott@email.arizona.edu.
-
SLA is planning a library tour at the juvenile detention center in Florence.
-
Paula:
- Has submitted the grant for the Info Ethics Roundtable poster session; will let us know when she hears back.
- So far, 15 students have RSVP’d to the “Art of Grants” workshop to be held April 14th 10:00AM-1:00PM at the UA Main Library. There is still room so if you would like to RSVP, contact Paula at pmaez@email.arizona.edu.
- Next Thursday REFORMA Tucson Chapter is having a presentation on their new website; this will be at 7:30 in the UA Main Library Info Commons classroom; a message has been sent out to the LSO listserv.
- Planning an “Interviewing Tea” with Sandy Kramer of the Health Sciences Library, to be held sometime in April. Will be a collaboration with SLA.
- Is talking with Coni Weatherford, SIRLS alum & PCPL Librarian, about a presentation on Emerging Technologies (presentation was given at AZLA last fall).
- Still possibility of Jan Knight, information broker, giving a presentation.
Fundraising Update (Mira Domsky)
-
Has talked with Laff’s Comedy Club and wants to do a fundraiser in which we sell tickets for the April 6th show. This would be a “silent” fundraiser in which we would not lose any money but simply sell the tickets for as much as we want and keep the profits. Mira will get the tickets to hand out at the next meeting.
-
Has not heard back from Liz Danforth on the t-shirts but wants to do a t-shirt design contest. Will send out an e-mail asking for submissions. Also possibilities of doing a t-shirt “I Survived Library Bootcamp” to sell at the IRLS504 classes.
Social Activities Update (Aaron Valdivia)
-
Oscar’s Night was a success; about 15 in attendance. Ben Grignon and Beth Hoffman tied for 1st place; did a coin toss and Ben won $20 gift certificate to Bookman’s. Beth received a runner-up prize of a Bookman’s mug “Censorship – the assassination of an idea.”
-
Auld Dubliner spring break social (“SIRLS Gone Wild”) next Friday; has reserved back room. Will send out an e-mail tonight and collect RSVPs.
-
Possibility of doing a drumming event for Library Faculty & SIRLS students; UA Librarian Jeanne Pfander has submitted an application for this. Event would be held April 1st.
-
May 5th is the End-of-the-Year Cinco de Mayo party at Jana Bradley’s house.
Other Issues & Future Agenda Items
-
Website Committee Report (Beth, Michelle, Cindy, Dereth, Rachel)
- Dereth has asked that Brian Atkinson be contacted by Leslie Kent Kunkel; Beth is investigating LRC options.
Constitution Update Proposals (Beth, Etta)-
Beth has e-mailed Etta to set up a meeting but not heard back. Will hope to have proposals by next meeting
Symposium Date Proposal (Etta)- Beth: LSO now has its own Skype account to be used for virtual attendance at meetings; this will make it easier so students can have a consistent “LSO” account to call, no matter who at the meeting has the laptop
- Rebecca: The SIRLS fundraiser in Benson April 15th may require carpools for students. Anyone planning to go who is willing to organize this?
- Possibly Paula and/or Alicia, depending on their schedules
- If you are wanting to carpool, please contact blakisto@email.arizona.edu.
- Will send out an e-mail to the LSO listserv asking who is interested
- Rebecca: SIRLS now has a new video recorder and digital camera (which also does low-resolution video). Bruce is working on procedures, but they should be available for students to check out for events, projects, classes and so on. Not sure whether we’ll need to have some kind of training or session on use. Are there any events coming up in the near future you might want to tape? Then we can map in the time needed to get everything ready.
- Good reaction from the group; this will be very useful!
- Paula: events coming up soon are not really appropriate for video recording (the library tour and 3-hour workshop)
- Amanda: Has free tickets to Laff’s Comedy Club for April 13th; we can send something out to the LSO listserv to invite all students. Must RSVP 48 hours before the event.
“SIRLS Gone Wild” T-shirts (Aaron, Mira, Jearold)
- Jearold not in attendance but will e-mail us with his ideas.
- Have had multiple requests from students.
- Some think $20 is too much to sell the shirts, some think $15 will sell better. Proposed we have a “sale week” to start at $15, and other sales (504 classes, events, etc.) but the price will generally be $20. We can always reduce if they are not selling.
- Aaron found a place to do screen prints at $200 for 24 shirts. Would be good to have shirts available for sale at the Info Ethics Roundtable poster session next week. Will e-mail Leslie to get a go-ahead.
Jobs/Internship Fair, March 28th (Cindy Elliott)
- Cindy not in attendance but sent e-mail to Rebecca with info:
- Needs volunteers to arrive at 5:00 and set-up.
- Paula, Rosanne, and possibly Rene & Alicia volunteer. Rebecca will send e-mail to Cindy with names.
- SLA will pick up the food and have LSO compensate.
- Requests we get a gift basket of some sort to raffle off at the event.
- Paula will get a Starbucks basket; LSO will compensate.
- If you would like to donate a gift to be raffled off, please contact Cindy at celliott@email.arizona.edu.
- Not related to Fair, but Cindy has been communicating with Sandy Kramer (AHSL) and she has agreed to give a talk on Interviewing Skills on April 9th at 6:00PM. SLA can provide dinner and Sandy will bring dessert and drinks.
- Beth has added to LSO calendar but we need more details, including location.
Programs Update (Paula)
- Good news - we were awarded a $350 grant for the Info Ethics Roundtable Poster Session! Have 7 submissions, including students from SIRLS, University of Texas, UCLA, and University of Illinois. To be held next Saturday, March 24th from 4:30-5:30 in the SIRLS courtyard. Will be providing food & drinks. Need volunteers to help with set-up at 4:00 as well as breakdown:
- Rene, Rosanne, Alicia, and Rebecca volunteer. If you want to volunteer contact Paula at pmaez@email.arizona.edu.
- Mary Feeney is back next week and will contact about doing the resume consultations.
- About 10 people have RSVP’d to the PCC Library Tour, held this coming Wednesday. Will be sending something out to the LSO listserv about carpooling if people are interested. To RSVP contact Paula at pmaez@email.arizona.edu.
- About 17 people have RSVP’d to the Art of Grants workshop to be held April 14th. Will be getting food for this event. To RSVP contact Paula at pmaez@email.arizona.edu.
Fundraising Update (Mira)
- Was communicating with Laff’s representative about fundraiser but never got back to her; the fundraiser would include Laff’s giving us tickets and us selling them for however much we want.
- Since Amanda has free tickets for April 13th we can do this as a “donation requested” event. Suggested donation could be $3; Laff’s tickets cost $10 usually. Rebecca will send out e-mail and organize.
- Will send out an e-mail about the t-shirt contest to begin getting submissions.
National Library Worker’s Day Event, April 17th (All)
- Ideas proposed by Rebecca include:
- Having some kind of social event
- We could invite the larger library community, and give all those who work at a library (maybe that show a business card?) a free LSO t-shirt or some other give away
- We could have a raffle for all library workers to win a “vacation” day (maybe including a massage, giftcard to a bookstore, giftcard to a locally owned restaurant, etc.)
- Having some volunteers drive around to all the PCPL branches, and maybe the UA & PCC Libraries
- We could deliver flowers, candy, cake, and/or balloons to the library workers
- Send “thank-you for all your hard work” cards to all the PCPL library branch managers, UA Library team leaders, etc.
- Group discussion on what would work best; most like the idea of going to the PCPL branches and bringing balloons & a big sign on butcher paper saying “thank you!”
- Volunteers to drive to the branches on April 17th: Alicia, Mira (Himmel Branch), Jay (Sam Lena, Bear Canyon, and Wilmot), Amanda, Rosanne. Rebecca will send something out to the listserv requesting more volunteers. To volunteer, contact Rebecca at blakisto@email.arizona.edu.
- We will have time to decorate the butcher paper before the meeting on April 6th; start around 5:00 before the meeting starts.
- Everyone bring markers, ribbons, other decorative material (Alicia will definitely bring markers)
- Paula will bring butcher paper
- Rebecca will bring some kind of food, and send something out to the listerv to invite others to help decorate
First Grade Library Card Program – “Learn, Read, Grow, Succeed”
- This is a PCPL program LSO wants to be involved in. Rebecca contacted Beth Matthias-Loghry to get an update of the response from schools and LSO’s participation.
- Will likely start at Richey Library. Mary Sanchez will try to contact the school librarian and see if she would be willing to coordinate a quick visit to describe the program for the first grade classes or even just the teachers.
- Waiting now to hear back on our contact at Richey. Rebecca will contact volunteers when she hears.
- Have previously asked for volunteers to go to the school(s) and do presentations to teachers and/or first grade classes. Volunteers include: Alicia, Aaron, Mira, Cecilia, Amanda, Roseanne, Etta. If you would like to volunteer to participate, please contact Rebecca at blakisto@email.arizona.edu.
Symposium Date Proposal (Etta)
- Etta absent from meeting; Rebecca will e-mail
Other issues, future agenda items (All)
- Website Committee Report: now consists of Beth, Michelle, Rachel, Jill. Hope to have something for the next meeting.
- Constitution Update Proposals: Beth has not heard back from Etta. Aaron has volunteered to help. Should only take a meeting, then Beth can e-mail to officers to review prior to the next LSO meeting.
Budget
There is approximately $2,000 in the budget. Additional funds will be needed for the symposium. Cecilia will look up the cost from the last symposium so we can project the cost of the November 2007 symposium. Additional fund raising will be needed including applying for a grant.
Brown Bag Sponsorship
Don Fallis has requested that LSO sponsor a brown bag presentation. Aaron will email Don Fallis to discuss this further.
Fund Raising: T-shirts and Candy Sales
The LSO T-shirts have been selling. Approximately 35 t-shirts have been sold so far.
Candy sales to raise money for LSO are planned for the fall.
Professional Development Events
Ideas for professional development opportunities for the fall are welcome. Currently there are two events planned.
LSO named ALA Student Chapter of the Year for 2007
Several SIRL's students plan to attend the ALA conference in June in Washington , D.C. to accept the Student Chapter of the Year award. Attending LSO members plan to meet for dinner in Washington D.C. after the award ceremony.
Bulletin Board
The bulletin board contains outdated material. Updating the board could be a shared responsibility. This will be discussed further with Paula Maez.
Mentors
Aaron, Alicia, Megan, and Jason have offered to be mentors to incoming SIRLS students.
Dine Around
Two students attended the Dine Around.
504 LSO Intro Talk
Aaron introduced LSO to incoming students in the 504 course. One t-shirt was sold. The 504 “boot camp” t-shirts will be offered to incoming students and then offered to all students in August. Aaron will email Jill a photo of the t-shirt so Jill can put it on the LSO site. Students could order them and pay through PayPal if they wanted.
Symposium
This will be discussed at the next meeting.
Upcoming Events

Myra is organizing a wine tasting event. She has looked into many venues. Right now Café Paraiso seems to be the best. They are on University Blvd. across from Gentle Ben's. They are going to start wine tasting events. We might be their first group.
She also called the Loft about fundraiser. For non-profits the large room is $500. The Hollywood Librarian movie is on DVD and could be played. We would invite the whole community. The only times that are out are during Banned Book Week, September 29 through October 6, 2007. During this time local libraries have the opportunity to offer a free screening of the movie.

We plan to sell tickets for $3 for 1 and 2 for $5. The money raised will help purchase easels for the poster session at the symposium. We will give Jill tickets for anyone in the Phoenix area that would like to participate.

Aaron will ask Bruce to tape the presentation Mary Evangeliste is giving on “Producing Successful Presentations” this Thursday at 5:30 pm in the SIRLS multipurpose room. It will also be broadcast via Breeze at http://breeze.ltc.arizona.edu/lso This is Rene's first time broadcasting a presentation via Breeze, so it would be best to attend in person if you can, but otherwise give it a try and we'll learn together.
Internship Fair
LSO can get a small van from the U/A motor pool if people want to carpool to the internship fair in Phoenix on Thursday, Oct. 25 th at the Carnegie Center in downtown Phoenix . The fair is from 5:30-6:30 pm. Recruiters are from a variety of places in Arizona including Scottsdale , Glendale , and Tucson .
There will be a door prize at the fair. Some possible gifts are T-shirts and gift certificates. Someone from Tucson needs to bring the gift to Jill at the start of the event. Jill has 4 T-shirts left.
SIRLS Brownbag – Oct. 10 th from 12 to 1:30 pm
LSO is giving Don Fallis $250 for Wednesday's brownbag. People who attend will be entered into a drawing. They may win an opportunity to socialize with the presenter and others at a dinner. This is a networking opportunity. The money will also be used to help pay the presenter's travel expenses. Aaron will ask Bruce Fulton if he can film the brownbag and make it into a Podcast. The title of the brownbag is Group Rights and Social Property: When Group Members Disagree. It will be in the SIRLS multipurpose room. See the SIRLS' calendar for more details.
Fund Raising
Mira – raised $82 from the ice cream social at Penguins. The raffle has generated about $70 so far. The raffle will be held the day of the symposium.
Mira – working on showing a “librarian themed” movie at The Loft as a fund raiser. The Loft needs us to show proof of insurance for the movie event. She is consulting with Risk Management at the U/A. SIRLS has insurance so it's a matter of getting the right paperwork to The Loft. The large movie room is ~$578 and the small movie room is ~$300. We'll have to pay something for the movie itself as well. The movie “Hollywood Librarian” is a possibility.
Wine tasting - tickets $13 to $20 to cover the cost. That one is probably not going to happen due to cost.
Symposium
Amanda submitted the IKON grant for $398 to cover the cost of the breakfast for the symposium.
René – we need a lot of volunteers for the symposium. Picking up the box lunches, running the registration table, moderating the rooms, someone to schedule the equipment for the rooms and someone to be in charge of the reception are the greatest needs. We may also need drivers for our out-of-town presenters.
New Officer – Alumni Liaison
