Organizations
for Students
All
SIRLS students are encouraged to become supporting members
of the Library Student Organization (LSO). Started at
the University of Arizona in 1971, LSO is recognized as
a student chapter by the American Library Association
(ALA).
Student contributions to SIRLS policies come through LSO.
Our student representatives are voting members of all
SIRLS search and faculty committees. Any officer will
be glad to speak to you about your concerns, and will
keep information private if requested.
We
also sponsor frequent social events such as free pizza
parties, happy hours, and site-seeing, as well as programming
on career-related topics.
To join LSO, please fill out the form available in our
office in the SIRLS Multi-purpose Room, or online at http://www.sir.arizona.edu/lso/join.html
and attach $20.00 (cash or check) for one year of membership.
ALA
membership is separate. Forms to join ALA are also available
in the SIRLS Multipurpose Room. ALA student memberships
are $25.00 per year. For more membership information,

Considering
a career in an archive or a corporate, museum, special
collections or medical library? Then you should join our
Student Chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA).
Membership is only $10.00 a year, or $15.00 for the whole
time you are a SIRLS student.
The
SLA sponsors networking lunches with practicing librarians
and tours of Tucson-area special libraries such as the
Arizona State Museum Library, the Arizona Daily Star (newspaper)
Library, and the Arizona Health Sciences Center Library.
Membership information is listed on the website listed
above and in our office in the SIRLS Multipurpose room
(look for the purple flyers on the desk).

Chapter, American Society for Information Science and
Technology (AzASIS&T)

Not
a student chapter per se, but an ASIS&T state chapter,
that actively promotes awareness and activities involving
information science and technology among SIRLS students
and the Arizona information community at large. AzASIS&T
contains many student members from SIRLS, two of our faculty
members (Anita Coleman and Don Fallis), and encourages
you to join too! Joining the national ASIS&T organization (which
automatically enrolls you in our state chapter) costs
only $30 a year, student rate.
