Cataloging and Metadata Education Web Clearinghouse: A Development Plan

By Anita Coleman

Task:

Determine a structure and format for the Cataloging and Metadata Education (CAME) web clearinghouse site and then locate appropriate content for inclusion (seeking permission where required). The ALCTS committee will act as an Advisory Board and monitor.

Milestones and Deliverables

  1. Proof-of-concept CAME
Brief description: This will be a simple, static web page with the basic categorical structure for the clearinghouse
Starting points (how will I proceed): Ingrid's report and the content for three levels of expertise; Analysis of selected LIS educators' websites used in support of their teaching in this area (samples include: Steve Miller, Candy Schwarz, Allison Carlyle, Arlene Taylor, and Anita Coleman)
    Due date: August 30
Status: Categories for CAME | Background Notes Dissemination plans (how will I get feedback): Share with Advisory Board.

  2. Report
Brief description: This report can be in the form of recommendations or draft policies on clearinghouse technical format (storage and archiving), metadata (exactly how much citation information), issues of content ownership, populating the clearinghouse (collection development) and location of items, and evaluation.
Starting point: A small review and co-optation and/or modification of successful educational digital library efforts (focused on MERLOT which has gained wide acceptance and DLESE which is praised as one of the best community-wide discipline-focused efforts to build an educational digital library).
    Due date: Sept. 30
Status: Wish List from Educat Listserv | Report Submitted | LC proposal (pdf)

  3. Prototype or clearinghouse with content and materials
Starting point: Gather the needs and ideas through a thoughtful and reflective discussion on the CatEd list ; a successful beginning has been made with the "Effective Practice Work' thread - what does the community really mean by web clearinghouse and what do they want in a Cataloging and Metadata Education clearinghouse? (see Wish List from Educat Listserv)
    Due date: Oct. 30
    Status: Go to Prototype Clearinghouse
