Description: This is the portal to the Smithsonian's Libraries (access to 1.5 million items through the Libraries' catalog, Archival, Manuscript and Photographic Collections Catalog (access to 230,000 descriptions of personal papers, manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, sound recordings, fils, and organmizational records from ten repositories), American Art Musuem Research Databases (access to 600,000 records comprising the national Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture Databases and others), specialized research bibliographies (15,500 citations specialized in Cephalopod, Marine Mammals, and Museum Studies research), and history fo the Smithsonian (10,000 records documenting the history of the Smithsonian).

Description: This on-line site is currently being upgraded, and it is intended that the new site be complete by the end of March 2005. It will enable you to browse the artefacts on display in the Museum's many cabinets and to search the Museum's Acquisition Register for particular artefacts in which you may be particularly interested. Right now the register database allows you to search by Inventory Number, Civilization, Class of Object, Sub-class of Object, Type of Object, Provenance, Date/Period, Description, Manufacture, Function, Decoration, Painter, Bibliography or Comparanda.
