INDEPENDENT STUDY PERIOD ASSIGNMENTS

To be completed between December 4, 2006 and January 2, 2007 PRIOR to coming to Tucson

There is quite a bit of work assigned during the Independent Study Period. Be sure to start immediately on December 4 and pace yourself through the busy holiday period. The list below will help orient you to the work that needs to be done.

• Modules and Class Schedule.

Start by reading the Schedule for the Tucson classes to introduce the modules covered by 504. Each module has work for you to do during the Independent Study Period, to prepare you for class. Click on the module name to bring up a study guide for each module. This guide introduces the module, defines learning outcomes and lists topics, readings and study questions.

• Readings

The module guide lists the reading and other assignments for you to do during the Independent Study Period and provides study questions to guide your reading.

We suggest that you work your way through the content modules and technology modules first and then the orientation and professional development modules closer to your visit to Tucson.

The readings can be found in several places:

• In required textbooks, Rubin and Dority
• On e-reserves in the library: http://eres.library.arizona.edu/eres/coursepage.aspx?cid=6164. The password will be emailed to you on the first day of the independent study period. The readings are in are in PDF format and require the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. If you do not have this software already installed on your computer, visit the Adobe Reader Download Page and follow the instructions to download the correct version for your computer operating system.
• On the web. URL’s will be in the module guides.

Once in Tucson, you will be asked to review the readings for each module the night before class discussion. We suggest that you take notes so that you can review what you have read quickly.

• Additional Assignments During the Independent Study Period
  
  
• Interview Assignment. Bring both a printed and electronic copy to class on the first day.
• SIRLS Web Site Scavenger Hunt. Bring both a printed and electronic copy to class on the first day.
• Issues Paper Assignment. Review this assignment and note the portions you should complete during the study period.
• Syllabus. Read this to understand the structure of 504
• Other 504 assignments. Review the assignments that you will be completing in Tucson or shortly after, including ePortfolio assignment, the student website assignment, the explanation of your grade for class participation, the Types of Libraries Group Project and notes on the final exam.

• Preparations for Tucson

Finally, be sure you are prepared for your visit to Tucson. Review the Checklist and note all instructions, requirements and deadlines. Make sure you make your Tucson travel and accommodations arrangements. December-January is high tourist season and flights and hotels fill early.
